Interesting! Publication of: Hot-Spotting, An Australian delivering foreign aid, by Rod Reeve

In his 25-year journey through hot spots across the globe, Rod Reeve has become one of Australia’s most experienced foreign-aid workers. Managing international aid projects has taken him from the opium fields of the Hindu Kush, to Iraq in the time of Saddam Hussein, the jungles of Papua New Guinea, and Aceh following the 2004 Tsunami. In Hot-Spotting Reeve reveals the dramas and complexities of working in the provision of international aid, and takes us behind disturbing news footage to connect with ordinary people living in some of the world’s most troubled locations.

The book reveals the workings of the $100 billion global aid program – 900,000 Australians alone donate regularly to overseas aid and 300,000 sponsor children. The author’s first-hand accounts give insights also into the ‘Live8’ and ‘Make Poverty History’ campaigns.

07/07/07 Events

The Make Poverty History Zero Seven Campaign, which aimed to highlight the 07.07.07 midway point and pressure the government towards 0.7%GNI in aid by 2015, organized a series of events.
The campaign trained 700 youth "Ambassadors" (selected from 1,500 applicants nation-wide) and mobilised them to campaign in marginal seats across Australia. Over one week leading up to 07.07.07, about 100 Ambassadors departed from each capital city and travelled through 17 towns campaigning all the way to Sydney. Over 6 nights, we staged 6 high-profile concerts in each different state. Upon everyone's arrival into Sydney, we held a concert at the Sydney Opera House and later that evening projected the Face Up to Poverty petition onto the side of the Sydney Opera House.
The campaign generated nearly 300 media hits in less than 3 months, reaching 11 million Australians through print media alone - potentially the biggest media campaigns ever orchestrated by Australian youth for a social cause. We mobilised 30,000 voters to join the Face Up to Poverty petition. Almost 300,000 people bought a 1.5hr DVD about our campaign through their daily newspaper. Most importantly, we got the Prime Minister John Howard to add his photo to the Face Up to Poverty petition, and the Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd announced (at our concert) that he would commit at least 0.5%GNI in aid by 2015 if elected - representing 8.8 billion dollars for the world's poor.
