October 17: International Day for Poverty Eradication

  • Sunday 14 October - Poverty Requiem, Ballymun Gospel Choir

First ever Irish performance of Peter Maissan's Poverty Requiem, by the Ballymun Gospel Choir, aAt 7pm mass in the Virgin Mary Church, Shangan Road, Ballymun, on Sunday. The well-known campaigner against poverty and injustice in Ireland, Fr Peter McVerry, will also address the congregation in Ballymun on Sunday.

  • Tuesday 16 October - Stand Up Pledge during Gorta World Food Day

During the annual Gorta World Food Day conference on Tuesday 16 October (World Food Day), Gorta will incorporate the Stand Up Pledge - declaring participants' commitment to stand up against poverty.

The annual commemoration of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty organised by ATD Fourth World (Ireland) takes place at the Famine Memorial, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1, at 11.30am.

There are also various other events around the country, in Wexford and Dundalk, Limerick, Cork and Roscommon, where people are Speaking Out Against Poverty through theatre projects, photo exhibitions, radio dramas, quilt projects and more.

On Wednesday 23 February 2005, the Irish NGOs launched their MakePovertyHistory campaign. This campaign will be calling on the Irish Government to honour its commitment to increase aid, cancel the debt and make international trade fairer.

Wake-Up to Poverty! on Saturday 10th. September

The MakePovertyHistory - Irish Campaign held an all night “Sit-Out” on Friday 9 September, in front of the government buildings in Merrion Street in Dublin.

Supporters and volunteers from over 40 development organisations, trade unions and campaigning groups, marked the upcoming UN World Summit by sitting out from 6pm till 6am to count the cost of failing to meet international targets for the reduction of poverty

On Monday 31 January the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies (CADA) in Northern Ireland publicly launched MAKE POVERTY HISTORY at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. There is now a MAKE POVERTY HISTORY NORTHERN IRELAND group comprising civil society members.

WHITE BAND DAY II - Wake-Up to Poverty! on Saturday 10th. September

On Friday 9th September at 12.30-2pm, the Make Poverty History coalition in Northern Ireland will assembly at Belfast City Hall to call for the biggest council in Northern Ireland to pass a resolution in support of the aims of the campaign and the GCAP. Individual councillors and members of the public will join a photocall to increase awareness of White Band Day II the following day and underline the importance of talks at the UN Summit to renew commitments to the MDGs.
