Media interest on the Challenges of Achieving MDGs continues in Bangladesh

PFM Bangladesh members participated in an interactive talk show on State Responsibility, Government’s Reform Agenda and Challenges of Achieving the MDGs  produced by NTV on July 14 as a post 7/7/7 initiative

In continuum of the various programmes related to the mid point of MDGs, NTV Bangladesh, a private TV Channel with international satellite links and an outreach of more than 2 million viewers aired a TV Talk Show on 14 July 2007.Dr. Asaduzzaman, Research Director, BIDS, and the Principal Researcher of PFM’s Progress Report on MDGs in Bangladesh 2007, Rasheda K. Choudhury, member IFT – GCAP and K. A. M. Morshed, Head of E - Governance and Development, UNDP Bangladesh took part in the lively discussion moderated by popular anchor Zahirul Alam. At a point of time when the country is being run by a transitional Care Taker government and the maximum attention of the media has been captured by massive anti corruption drives, reforms of the political processes, institutions and parties this was indeed a commendable step on the part of the media to continue to raise MDG issues beyond 7/7/7. The speakers highlighted the fact that despite government commitment, if the current trend continues, then around fifty million people (absolute number) may still be below the poverty line in 2015 in Bangladesh. It is, therefore, imperative that everybody - government, civil society and development partners must take up this challenge seriously and work with total commitment.

Stand Up and Take Action Works!
This year Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty and Inequality mobilised an incredible 173,045,325 million people during over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries. In addition to the increase in numbers and the breaking of a new Guinness World record for the largest mobilization of human beings in recorded history, Stand Up 2009 was characterised by even stronger political messages than other years, as the 2015 deadline for the fulfillment of the MDGs looms and the devastating combined affects of the climate, financial, food and gender crises have begun to manifest in increased poverty and inequality.
