WAKE UP TO POVERTY - WHITE BAND DAY II - 10TH SEPTEMBER

On Friday 9th September, the Paraguayan coalition held a peaceful demonstration outside the national congress building. The steps leading to the building's entrance were adorned with striking white banners demanding action to be taken on poverty. On the 12th the coalition presented Congress with an Alternative report they had compiled surrounding the country's progress on the MDGs. The report offers an analysis into the countrys' poverty levels, education, health, work place and the environment. It aims to raise public awareness of the MDGs and urges its government to fulfil their promises in reaching them.

Events

The national coalition, “Paraguay, Sin Excusas contra la Pobreza” is taking action to exert pressure on the Paraguayan government to take concrete steps to eradicate poverty. It is doing so through GCAP’s world action days. The first of these mobilisations took place around the Mercosur meeting between the 18th and 20th June where the coalition asked for a Mercosur without poverty or inequality. On the 18th, activists wrapped white bands around the “Panteón de los Héroes” in the centre of the capital Asuncion. A march took place on the 20th under the slogan “Integration without poverty and inequality, do it now!” and was organised by various groups and forums. The manifesto that was presented to leaders of Mercosur member countries demanded social, economic and political integration based on dignity and diversity. This integration was based on assuring better standards of living for all and a promise to eradicate poverty in the region.

The second period of action was the International White Band Day before the meeting of the G8 leaders. A letter was handed to the embassies of the G8 countries, which demanded that these, the most industrialised countries, cancelled the external debt of the poorest countries and increased the quality and quantity of aid. In addition to this, the letter requested an end to the political conditionality that is attached to aid.

The next public action is due to take place on 10th September when a state report will be presented highlighting the progress of the MDGs. This date will see 173 heads of state meet at the UN Headquarters to evaluate the efforts of these governments to meet the targets set out in the Millennium Declaration. One other mobilization event will take place in December around the WTO meeting that will focus on fair trade and development in poorer countries.
