THOUSANDS OF DOMINICANS JOINED THE 43.7 MILLIONS OF PEOPLE THAT STOOD UP AROUND THE WORLD AGAINST POVERTY AND INEQUALITY
The National Coalition of The Global Call to Action Against Poverty in the Dominican Republic (GCAP-RD) promoted the mobilization of thousands of Dominicans on October 17th, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and register more than 25 activities and around 170,000 people to contribute to brake the Guinness’s World Record of people standing up and speaking out against poverty and inequality.
9TH OCTOBER: PRESS CONFERENCE
The release of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty for the activities on October 17th took place on October 9th in the Cinema Café, a very popular cultural centre in Santo Domingo, with a photo exhibit showing the reality of people who lives in extreme poverty situation. The Dominican press was invited to help spread de message of the Millennium Development Goal’s (MDG´s) and invites all the citizens to take part of this important campaign.
12TH OCTOBER: CRY OF THE EXCLUDED DAY
The October 12th has become an important day for Latin America. GCAP National Coalition along with others organizations had a big mobilization in front of the National Congress demanding their representatives an increase on the education, health, houses and gender equality for their National Budget for 2008, allowing this way to get closer to the MDG´s. FROM THE 12TH TO THE 15TH OCTOBER: WHITE BANDS´ DISTRIBUTION.
More than 16 thousands white bands where distributed all over the country to journalists, Government ministers, women ONG´s, congressman and congress women, newspapers and magazines directors, civil society coalitions, students, and others. They also received brochures with information about October 17th and the MDG´s. They were invited to collaborate organizing activities on October 17th.
FROM THE 15TH TO THE 19TH OCTOBER: STAND-UP ACTS IN SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES
The GCAP National Coalition in the Dominican Republic had as a priority work with students. They elaborated and distributed hundreds of guidelines in private and public schools and universities, so the students could do different activities, such as research paperwork , debates and artistic work related to poverty and inequality. They also called everyone to organize or joined an October 17th event.
During the October 17th week, schools from all over the country took part of the actions organized by the GCAP-RD by The Dominican Teachers Association (ADP), the biggest and most important union in the country got involved on the Global Call to Action against Poverty and Inequality, taking the message to their more than 150,000 students who stood up and spoke out on the International Day for the Eradication of poverty.
OCTOBER 16TH : MEDITATION AGAINST POVERTY
The Record Guinness opening on October 16th started with a meditation organized by the well known “Art of Living Foundation” on the Dominican Republic. With this beautiful and peaceful event, fill of positive energy, they asked the leaders of the country to take actions for the MDG´s so the Dominican people could have a better life.
OCTOBER 17TH
WE STOOD UP AND SPOKE OUT AGAINST POVERTY AND INEQUALITY
8AM : STANDING UP DURING FLAG CEREMONY IN SCHOOLS.
Thousands of children all over the country, but especially in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, did a special Flag Ceremony where they stood up and spoke out against poverty and talked about their commitment in the struggle for this cause.
The Dominican Teachers´ Association made a called to all the schools to join the activities and mobilized more than 150,000 students on this special day, showing this way, their support to those who lives in extreme poverty situation so their president and their representatives realized they need to take urgent measure.
FROM 8AM TO 10AM: FLYERS AND WHITE BAND DISTRIBUTION IN IMPORTANT AVENUES.
The day started with mobilizations in important avenues of Santo Domingo, where different organizations of the GCAP National Coalition where giving away white bands and brochures with information about the campaign and the Millennium Development Goals. It was a way of making people more sensitive about the importance of the Day, knowing that they could take part of the struggle, and making this way that more people used the global symbol against poverty, the white band.
10AM : STUDENTS VISIT THE NATIONAL CONGRESS.
At 10 am a student commission along with the GCAP-RD staff visited the National Congress where they were received by several representatives who listened to their demands with the energy of a new generation that needs a real change of the social politics of their country. The representatives stood up against poverty in a symbolic act where they promised to fight poverty.
4PM: POVERTY CONFERENCE
During the afternoon the activities continue. "The Social Study Centre Father Juan Montalvo" organized several conferences with people who live in extreme poverty and what have they done for their communities to have a better way of living:
5PM: STAND UP AT UNIBE
The law students from the Iberoamerican University (UNIBE), gave their support to the campaign thru a “stand up” activity and a conference about global poverty. They also had a photo exhibit, a documentary and important facts about world poverty.
7PM: BIG CONCERT WITH GCAP-RD AMBASSADOR PAVEL NUÑEZ AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY
The closer of the International Day for the Eradication of poverty ended with a big concert in the State University (Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo), with the well known Dominican singer Pavel Nuñez. Pavel during the passed two months did a tour around the country singing in national’s universities and taking with him not only his music and songs but the message of the GCAP, as the national ambassador.

MILES DE DOMINICANOS Y DOMINICANAS SE UNEN A LOS 43.7 MILLONES DE PERSONAS QUE EN TODO EL MUNDO SE LEVANTARON CONTRA LA POBREZA Y LA DESIGUALDAD.
El Comité Nacional del Llamado Global a la Acción Contra la Pobreza (GCAP-RD) promovió la movilización de miles y miles de dominicanas y dominicanos durante el 17 de octubre, Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la Pobreza, y registró más de 25 actividades y cerca de 170,000 personas para contribuir así a romper el record Guinnes de más personas levantándose y alzando la voz contra la pobreza y la desigualdad.
8 DE OCTUBRE: CONFERENCIA DE PRENSA
Las actividades del Comité Nacional se iniciaron con una convocatoria a la prensa nacional, donde se solícito a las y los periodistas su contribución a la difusión de los objetivos de la campaña y en la sensibilización de la ciudadanía sobre la situación de la pobreza en el país y en el mundo. La conferencia de prensa se realizó en Cinema Café, lugar muy frecuentado por la juventud de Santo Domingo y durante ella se presentó una exposición de fotos que mostró distintas escenas de extrema pobreza en el país.
12 DE OCTUBRE: DÍA DE LOS/LAS EXCLUIDOS/AS.
Por segundo año consecutivo el GCAP-RD unió esfuerzos con importantes organizaciones de base y alianzas para conmemorar, críticamente, el inicio de la colonización y expoliación del Nuevo Mundo. Junto a la Red Urbano Popular realizó una vigilia frente al Congreso Nacional demandando aumentos significativos en el Presupuesto Nacional del 2008, para educación, salud, vivienda, equidad de género y para las personas con discapacidad, que hagan posible avances significativos hacia los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM).
12 AL 15 DE OCTUBRE DITRIBUCION DE MILES DE BANDAS BLANCAS.
Mas de 16 mil bandas y cintas blancas fueron distribuidas en todo el país a comunicadores y funcionarios de gobiernos, organización de mujeres y parlamentarios, directotes de diarios y revistas, coaliciones de la sociedad civil y estudiantes, quienes recibieron información sobre el Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la Pobreza y los ODM y se les motivó a usar la banda blanca y difundir las acciones a realizar durante toda la semana del 15 al 19 de octubre, la Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP) puso a disposición del GCAP-RD su estructura organizativa a fin de hacer posibles que tanto las bandas y cintas blancas, como los 10,000 Brochures que se imprimieron llegaran a las escuelas.
Se circuló también una guía para el aula con sugerencias de actividades a desarrollar en las mismas.
15 AL 19 DE OCTUBRE: ESCUELAS, COLEGIOS Y UNIVERSIDADES SE LEVANTAN CONTRA LA POBREZA Y LA DESIGUALDAD
Continuando con su objetivo central de sensibilizar y movilizar los y las jóvenes dominicanos, el Comité Nacional elaboró y distribuyó instructivos entre decenas de colegios privados y cientos de escuelas públicas en todo el país llamándolo a movilizarse durante la semana del 15 al 19 de octubre.
El Pleno de la Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP), la organización sindical más grande y prestigiosa de la República Dominicana, al aprobar sumarse al Comité Nacional e integrarse a las acciones del GCAP promovió el que miles de maestros y maestras en toda la geografía nacional desarrollaran en las aulas actividades, tales como elaboración de ensayos, y murales, así como la organización de debates sobre la pobreza y la desigualdad.
16 DE OCTUBRE: MEDITACION CONTRA LA POBREZA
La Fundación “El Arte de Vivir”, capítulo dominicano de esta prestigiosa organización mundial, dio apertura al conteo para el Record Guinnes, la noche del 16 de octubre, con una singular y hermosa “Jornada de Meditación” en los jardines de la Plaza de la Cultura, en la que se pidió a los líderes del pueblo dominicano a realizar acciones que posibiliten el alcance de los (ODM).
17 DE OCTUBRE
NOS LEVANTAMOS Y ALZAMOS LA VOZ CONTRA LA POBREZA Y LA DESIGUALDAD Y CONTAMOS PARA ROMPER EL RECORD GUINNES
8 DE LA MAÑANA: ACTOS DE BANDERAS EN ESCUELAS Y COLEGIOS.
Miles de niñas niños y adolescentes de todo el país, pero especialmente de Santo Domingo, capital de la República Dominicana dedicaron los actos de inicio de docencia, donde se enhiesta la bandera nacional, a reflexionar sobre la pobreza y explicitar su compromiso con la lucha por su erradicación.
Decenas de colegios privados y miles de escuelas públicas su sumaron al llamado de levantase contra la pobreza, solo la Asociación Dominica de Profesores (ADP) movilizó más de 150,000 alumnos en todo el territorio nacional contra la pobreza y la desigualdad.
8 A 10 DE LA MAÑANA: VOLANTEO EN LAS CALLES.
Miembros del GCAP y organizaciones amigas se colocaron en diferentes semáforos de las principales avenidas de la capital dominicana, entregando bandas blancas y volantes con informaciones sobre la campaña y los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio. Fue una forma de sensibilización dando a conocer a los ciudadanos la importancia del día y logrando de esta forma que la mayor cantidad de personas utilizaran el símbolo mundial contra la pobreza, la banda blanca.
10 DE LA MAÑANA: DELEGACION DE ESTUDIANTES VISITA EL CONGRESO NACIONAL Y ENTREGA DE CARTA A PARLAMENTARIOS/AS.
A las 10 de la mañana una comisión de estudiantes de los colegios Jerome Brunner y Santa Teresita, en representación de las escuelas y colegios junto a los/las miembros/as del GCAP-RD visitaron el Congreso Nacional. La delegación visitó el hemiciclo de la Cámara de Diputados y compartió con varios diputados/as quienes escucharon las peticiones de los/las jóvenes y, en un acto simbólico, se “levantaron” comprometiéndose de esta forma en la lucha contra la pobreza.
4 DE LA TARDE: SEMINARIO POBREZA
En el Centro de Estudios Sociales Padre Juan Montalvo se desarrolló un importante encuentro donde se presentaron análisis sobre distintas manifestaciones de la pobreza en el país, así como la presentación de proyectos concretos, de carácter comunitario que realizan acciones en contra de la pobreza:
-Proyecto Materno-Infantil sobre Desnutrición a cargo de Ada Celestino.
-Proyecto Rancho Arriba a cargo de José Urbina de CEPAE.
-Agenda de Desarrollo Barriales y Municipales a cargo de Nelson Paulino y Sánchez de la Cruz del Centro de Estudios Sociales Padre Juan Montalvo
-Movimiento Cuarto Mundo con una representante de Haití.
5 DE LA TARDE: UNIVERSIDAD IBEROAMERICANA
El Comité de Derecho de la Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) realizó un masivo “levántate” y una charla sobre pobreza “Pobreza Generalizada en la Actualidad Mundial” acompañada de fotos, videos y datos sobre la pobreza mundial.
En la actividad de UNIBE hablaron también el Decano de la Facultad de Derecho, Dr. José B. Pérez Gómez y Magaly Pineda, directora ejecutiva del Centro de investigación para la Acción Femenina (CIPAF), punto focal del GCAP en Dominicana.
7 DE LA NOCHE: GRAN CONCIERTO DEL EMBAJADOR DEl GCAP-RD
PAVEL NUÑEZ EN LA UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE SANTO DOMINGO.
Un gran concierto, en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, culminó las actividades del GCAP-RD en el Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la Pobreza. Pavel Núñez, conocido cantautor dominicano, finalizó así un recorrido de varias semanas que lo llevó por las más importantes universidades del país, no sólo entregando su voz y sus canciones, sino también su mensaje como Embajador del Llamado Mundial a la Acción contra la Pobreza en la Rep. Dominicana.

WHITE BAND DAY II - Wake-Up to Poverty! on Saturday 10th. September
Preparations for the second key day of global GCAP mobilisation have included workshops in schools and universities to further awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) and GCAP.
Media and public figures are also being encouraged to promote the MDG's and actions e.g. wear the white band. A traditional event will also be taking place.
