WHITE BAND DAY II - Wake-Up to Poverty! on Saturday 10th. September

Activists from Ibase, ActionAid Brasil, Fase, Inesc, the Landless Movement, and the drama group Centro do Teatro do Oprimido took over the beach of Ipanema - the most famous beach of Rio de Janeiro - marching for the end of poverty in the Global Call to Action Against Poverty in Brazil. The march started at 11am of the beautiful sunny day - the time when the beach was crowded with people (estimated 15 thousand persons). Drums started to beat while some demonstrators carried giant white bands and puppets along the shore, and others distributed flyers and white bands to the people on the beach. ActionAid Brasil´s Country Director Jorge Romano, the Policy Coordinator Rosana Heringer and the Ibase's Coordinator Fernanda Carvalho gave interviews to radio stations and newspapers that were covering the event.

The Ipanema area is one of the most expensive places of Rio de Janeiro, where many influent people live. The campaigners chose this area to sensitise people on the global claim to end poverty.

In the same day, in the evening, a demonstration-party was held in a traditional samba house of Rio - a ballroom club founded in 1867 and famous for holding several important libertarian events, amongst the famoust being the claims for the end of slavery in Brazil. Landless Movements activists spoke about the Global Call to 600 people in the house and singers played famous protest songs.
