National website:
Quick background
GCAP Argentina has completed a one-page brief including background information.
National Coalition
More than 150 civil society organisations joined the Argentinian Coalition in August 2005 (NGOs, trade unions, religious groups, universities, women and youth groups) to ensure the debate on poverty and inequality causes is planned in the political agenda and to foster this debate in the civil society
They have agreed to fight against poverty causes, under the national slogan: NINGÚN HOGAR POBRE EN LA ARGENTINA!
(No poor homes in Argentina!)
Structure and Members
The Argentinian Coalition has been decentralized in order to encourage the civil society organisations to join the national platform and to have wide representation throughout the country:
- National Coordination: Political body composed of the regional representatives and other national organisations.
- Regional Coordinations: Executive body composed of local organisations (Centro-Cuyo, Metropolitana, NEA, NOA and Patagonia).
The Argentinian Coalition project for 2007
The main poverty-related issue of Argentina is the increasing wealth concentration and its increasingly unfair and unequal distribution. This process has been worsening since mid 70s and in spite of the economic growth and the policies taken during last years, it has not been reverted.
Reverting this situation supposes to fight against poverty causes and implement distributive and universal policies that change the current wealth concentration and improve the life conditions of all the people, and in particular the most vulnerable (women and children).
This is why for 2007, we have decided to focus the action of the Argentinian Coalition on “wealth distribution” (issue already pointed out by the Platform since the beginning), taking into account the various causes of poverty. This is why we have chosen to foster the debate on “universal allocation for children”.
In addition, each region will continue to work on its local issues: water and land access, native people, pressure on the lawmakers to fulfil their commitments to meet the MDGs, etc.
The Argentinian Coalition will continue to articulate to the Global Campaign for Education in Argentina and the women group REPEM and some youth groups.
