TIYENDE PAMODZI means Forward Together or Moving Together, the song was a pillar of solidarity in the fight for political independence. Year End 2007 Event

Miss UNZA Beauty Pageant ends 2007 for the Zambian Campaign in style

Introduction: It is not every time that issues of national development take the form of entertainment... but that is just what the Miss University of Zambia (UNZA) Beauty Pageant offered on December 7, 2007, to students and others present at the event.

The theme of the pageant was 'Stand Up and Speak Out against Poverty' and the contestants were required to formulate outfits depicting at least 6 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).... much to the anxiety of all present, for the challenging task this was expected to be....the girls did it...

Various beautiful outfits were worn ranging from those depicting extreme poverty to the very second last goal of environmental sustainability. The girls kicked off the traditional cat walk synonymous with models with a Candle Light Stand Up Session where various reminders of accountability for national leadership were read out.

The event calminated with the crowning of Mayuya Bulawayo as Miss UNZA 2007 and for her MDG outfit, she had picked on Goal Number 4, Reducing Child Mortality. Mayuya had distiguished her otherwise ordinary black satin dress with two large red and white ribbons with a blue net in the middle and carried a food basket in one hand, which she said signified the need for a balanced and healthy diet for children.

The black, she said, stood for the African continent, the red ribbon for the deadly HIV/AIDS pandemic, the white ribbon for safe motherhood, which is significant in the life of any child and the blue net for safe, clean drinking water and the importance of using insecticide treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria.

Mayuya Bulawayo, a first year student at the University of Zambia (UNZA), has since joined the Zambian Campaign as Ambassador on MDGs.
