WHITE BAND DAY II - 10th September 2005
The national coalition marked White Band Day II on Saturday 10th September by staging their first Popular March Of the People from 10am-2pm. Over 100 people took part including local families, workers and strong support was given from civil society representatives with attendance from the Mayor of Bukavu, the Provincial Governor’s Advisor and representatives from different faith groups. The Governor’s Advisor officially opened and closed the event.
Many people wore white clothes and white bands in solidarity for the Global Call to Action against Poverty. The march went through Bukavu’s main streets to come to a stand outside the UN’s offices (OCHA). There was a strong media turnout with many journalists and photographers coming to photograph and record the March and radio coverage was also secured on the day, giving details of what was happening and how people could get involved.
