FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
G8 Leaders side-step poverty, pressure on German Presidency to deliver.
The St. Petersburg G8 Summit ended with little progress in the fight against poverty.
Johannesburg, South Africa 2005-07-17Nelson Mandela will make an appearance at Africa Standing Tall Against Poverty in concert with Live8, the first of three anti-poverty concerts to be performed in Africa in the historic year of 2005. Mr Mandela’s appearance will form part of the global link from Johannesburg with the other 6 concerts around the world during the early hours of the evening on July 2. “The issue of poverty and inequality still remains incomplete business as far as Mr Mandela is concerned. Even though he has announced his retirement he will continue this battle,” says John Samuels, Chief Executive Officer, Nelson Mandela Foundation. This, the first concert, will take place on July 2 a few days before the G8 meeting in Gleneagles Scotland where the leaders of the world’s most powerful nations will take decisions which will dramatically affect Africa’s future. It will be linked to the 6 concerts being performed around the world organized by Bob Geldof and Live8. It is anticipated that billions of people worldwide will attend these concerts or view them on television. Come and show your solidarity and join the Global Call to Action against Poverty. Give your voice to the voice of millions around the world who will be joining together on this day to tell world leaders to cancel debt, remove trade barriers and provide more and better aid to enable the world’s poorest countries, many of them in Africa, lift themselves out of debt. Come and Stand Tall Against Poverty. Please wear a white band to the concert. Africa Standing Tall Against Poverty A free concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg.
