FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The world’s largest civil society alliance (GCAP) call on the Japanese Ambassador to help end poverty

London 2008-01-18

LONDON - At 1030 A New Year’s Card calling on the Japanese Government to use its leadership of the G8 to help end poverty, has been presented to the Japanese Ambassador in London. Dorothy Gillian Ngoma, Executive Director of the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi will formally hand it over on behalf of GCAP (Global Call to Action against Poverty).

The presentation is part of a global action at Japanese Embassies around the world launching a global civil society campaign leading up to the next G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan in July. The campaign is pressing G8 leaders to keep their promises on increased aid and debt cancellation made at previous G8 summits and take further action on emerging issues such as the need for polluting countries to pay for climate change adaptation and to deliver health services for all.

Following the card's handover, Dorothy Ngoma and representatives from the GCAP alliance (as detailed below) discussed the Japanese’s government’s aspirations for the Summit with the Ambassador.

The following were present at the handover and subsequent meeting:

  • Dorothy Gillian Ngoma, Executive Director of the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi
  • Alison Woodhead, Head of Global Campaigning, Oxfam GB
  • Roxane Philson, Campaigns Director, DATA
  • Martin Kirk, Head of Advocacy, Save the Children UK
