Outcomes of GCAP forum on trade and regional integration
Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP)
hosted a forum on trade and continental integration in Accra, Ghana.
Representatives
of this worldwide alliance and trade-based civil
society organisations
debated the key issues of trade, aid, good
governance and human
rights.
The forum agreed that while a continental union
government was
desirable, Africa should first solve problems related to
regional
integration and trade policies with other continents.
The
forum was attended by over 100 representatives of African civil
society
organisations. Speakers included Christophe Zoungrana from GCAP Africa
secretariat, Dr Tetteh HORMEKU of the Third World Network (TWN) - Africa,
Valérie TRAORE of the Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development
(ACORD) and Theo UVANGA representing Namibia Development Trust and GCAP
Namibia.
Participants to the forum called on African Union Heads of State
to
ensure that greater integration and economic growth accelerates
poverty
alleviation and freedom of movement for all African citizens.
