NGOs want Chancellor Merkel to cancel Indonesian debt

The International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID) has written to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who currently leads the G8 group of countries, asking for debt cancellation over the debt of German Warships. Indonesia is one of the countries in the South that is suffering from a huge debt of nearly 1,314 trillion Rupiah (US$ 143 billion). The Indonesian Government has been allocating a substantial amount from the government's budget to service this debt.

Estimates say that around Rupiah 70 trillion is doled out annually to service this debt and this is more than what is allocated to social services such as health, education, housing, public safety and the environment. The debt repayment has prevented the Government in reducing poverty in Indonesia.

Enclosed is the letter INFID wrote to Ms. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federative Republic of Germany.
