Millennium Campaign

Written by Caroline Kent Florence, June 4th 2005 - Rock icon, Lenny Kravitz performs at a concert in Italy to raise awareness among Italian youth on issues related to poverty and the Millennium Goals. Signed by 189 prime ministers and governments, the Millennium Goals commit the world to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; reducing child and maternal mortality, fighting the diseases that ravaged entire world region; protecting the environment; ensuring drinkable water is availablefor all; and to creating a global partnership between rich and poor countries. The concert was organised together with the Italian Millennium Campaign, the Province of Florence and MTV Italy as part of their No Excuse 2015 campaign. At the concert venue the visitors were able to pick up their white bands - the global symbol of the anti-poverty campaigns-and visit the mobile "Millennium Gates" exibition. This isn't Lenny Kravitz' first engagement for the Millennium Campaign - a global Initiative that works closely with the Global Call to Action against Poverty to support citizens' efforts to hold their government to account for the Millennium promise. The rock star joins prominent artists, such as Micheal Douglas, Los Tigres del Norte, Youssou N'Dour and many others in featuring in the "Only With your Voice" celebrity clips, which are also aired on MTV. Asked about his involvement in the campaign, Kravitz said "Poverty affects one billion men and women on our planet. There is no excuse for these injustices any longer and there won't be in the 2015. The governments have to listen to our voices and keep their promises. I believe that each of us has to start acting on our own grassroot level, because injustices and poverty are everywhere. Everyone can do something." And Italy is a good place to start. Marina Ponti of the Millennium Campaign, stated "Italy scarsely commits itself to achieving these goals, and it is in the last position in the world for providing international aid".
