Event: Addressing the Disability Disconnect

CGCAP is proud to co-sponsor an event organised by Disabled People's International entitled "Eradicating Extreme Poverty: Addressing the Disability Disconnect".

Please join us on Monday 23 September from 11:00 - 12:30 in the Secretariat Building at the UN Headquarters (S-2726+2727).

Governments and individuals alike must focus attention on marginalised communities like people with disabilities, if we are truly going to "Leave No One Behind".

Globally, one billion people have disabilities.  800 million of these women, men and children live in the countries of the global South.  People with disabilities -- who comprise 20% of the world's most impoverished -- are not only more vulnerable to poverty, their poverty is further compounded by other inequalities.

This discussion will underscore how development is closely linked with social justice as well as disability-induced inequalities.  How do we break down barriers and create enabling conditions for the participation of people with disabilities in development?  We must address the roots of poverty in order to ensure equitable development and eradicate poverty.

Other co-sponsors of this UN side-event include The Hans Foundation, UNDESA and the Permanent Mission of India (tbc).
