World Day for Decent Work - October 7th

Filed Under:

"The economic crisis threatens the jobs and futures of people everywhere. Decades of deregulation, and the greed and excess of a tiny minority, have pushed the world into the deepest recession since the 1930s. Decent work must be at the centre of government actions to bring back economic growth and build a new global economy that puts people first. "

This is the International Trade Union Confederation's (ITUC) call for World Decent Day on October 7th. Millions of people around the world will be joining in and we're inviting GCAP partners, national coalitions and constituency groups to take part.

In the last year world poverty as a result of the economic crisis has continued to soar and it is estimated that almost 1 billion people now go hungry every day. If urgent and concrete action is not taken, millions more people, mostly those living in countries in the global south, will fall deeper into extreme poverty throughout 2010. Decent work is one of key pillars of a people-centred approach to solving the crisis.

We must send a clear message to local, national and global leaders that civil society will not stop putting pressure on them until they hear our case and take action.

[One of the GCAP coalitions taking part is GCAP Argentina/FOCO who are organising a seminar about decent work for women and youth. People from the Ministry of Work, labor unions and academics will be taking part. The objective is to open up a space for discussion about decent working conditions for women and youth, in the framework of the world crisis and in relation to poverty. - unfortunately this event was cancelled]

The GCAP Feminist Task Force has made a statement on the occasion of the World Day for Decent Work.
