GCAP Liberia - report on the World AIDS day and the International Human Rights day
GCAP Liberia have organised marches and seminars in recent days to highlight World AIDS Day and International Human Rights Day.
GCAP Liberia and partners organised a march in Buchanan City to raise awareness of AIDS and to empower citizen's to hold their Government to account for the promises they made in 2000 as part of the Millennium Declaration.
In Liberia, AIDS remains a serious problem in Liberia with prevalence rates of nearly 10% is some areas. UN agencies are concerned that there is still a great stigma around the disease and the real rate could be much higher as many people are unwilling to be tested.
2008 is a crucial year being the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Poverty is a gross violation of an individual's rights, and in Liberia more than 85% of the population currently live below the poverty line - of which a majority are youth and women. Liberia also suffers from other gross violations of human rights in particular for the prison population and marginalised groups.
