Activities in Africa gather momentum in the run up to Stand Up

Filed Under:

More reports keep coming through of GCAP mobilising with partners across Africa, with poverty hearings and other events taking place throughout the continent in the run up to Stand Up and Take Action in October 17-19.

Poverty hearings have taken place in a number of countries in Africa. We have seen a report from South Africa, and poverty hearings have also taken place in Liberia, Kenya and Cameroon.

Below are some excerpt from those hearings:

Participant at Cameroon Poverty Hearing - Dogmo CedrixIn Cameroon, people from all ages gave testimony of their struggle with poverty.

Cedrix lives with his parents who go without water and electricity in the house because they are struggling to send his other three kin to school but cannot afford to send Cedrix to school because of the specialised and expensive nature of his school.

Naitore addresses the Jury During the Poverty hearing in NairobiA poverty hearing in Nairobi, Kenya, was presided by renowned Industrialist Manu Chandaria.

Monica Naitore testified: "I am from Mwichwili, and my feet have stepped in Nairobi because of the magnitude of my poverty. Let me tell you, I have poverty of an enomous magnitude. I was left with children by my late son. He was the only child. He passed on. He left me with three children. The last born was three months when my son passed on. My children are going to school,  but am defeated because of the poverty I am going through."

A section of students at Gambol Secondary School in Garowe, the capital of the Puntland State in North-eastern SomaliaFollowing GCAP Somalia's successful  August action for International Youth Day, the coalition has once again organised people for International Peace Day on 21st of September to act on both peace and poverty.  This last action was doubly important for Somalia as both insecurity and destitution are serious issues there and have an appalling impact on individuals, families, communities as well as the whole nation. Meetings were held inin Hargeisa (Somaliland), Garowe (Puntland), Baidoa (Southwest) and Mogadishu, the capital.

Messages from these events and hearings, along others from Asia and Latin America, were heard at the international poverty hearing held in New York during the High Level Event on the Millennium Development Goals.

These events and poverty hearings are all building up to the largest global anti-poverty mobilisation: Stand Up and Take Action in October 17-19.
