Events and days for the mobilisation of women in 2007
1. The World social forum
AWEPON has been mandated to facilitate and mobilise women in the continent to participate in the up coming world social forum to be held in Nairobi in 2007. AWEPON is also a member of the organising group and is being asked to organise the GCAP activities during the Forum. Within this mandate AWEPON will be hosting a number of activities some of which include;
- The Women’s court
- Ecumenical women’s meeting
- Gender and macroeconomic policy/ economic literacy
- A workshop on Budgets, the New Aid modalities “where are the resources for women?”
- Feminisation of poverty workshop
2. International women’s day 8th march 2007
It is planned that a lot of advocacy on gender issues should be highlighted on 8th march. The specific theme will be decided after consultations with the ministry of gender. The GCAP activities will highlight issues of domestic violence, education, HIV/AIDS, and health. Different members of the national coalition will organise activities to run through the week.
3. People’s budget campaign – 7th – 15th June 2007
The coalition will undertake a budget and public expenditure monitoring campaign to deepen citizens understanding and the debates at all levels especially at the grass roots for them to demand for accountability. This campaign will culminate into the time when the national budget will be read. The campaign will be on financing for Gender equity and women’s human rights.
4. G8 2007
Each year there are several events are international meetings like the G8 meeting, WB/IMF, as a CSOs campaign the coalition will use these international events to hold talk show around matters of concern at the different points in time
5. Council of Ministers meetings of East African Community June- August 2007
The East African Community is a strategic economic block for Eastern Africa. AWEPON through the sub-regional consultative meeting was mandated to take lead in creating and identifying regional events that the sub-region can take advantage of to hold activities that represent a joint voice. One such event will be the Ministers of Finance meeting. The dates have not been set but once announced this will be communicated. The activities however, will entail production and presentation of reports on financing for development, debt and above all policy briefs that will be a result of the sub-regional analysis of the East Africa national Budgets in June.
6. Oct 17th World poverty day
Food security is one of the issues that the GCAP has not paid much attention to, the Uganda coalition would like to use the World food day to link food security to poverty so that the two can be tackled simultaneously. AWEPON is embarking on a study to assess Trade challenges for women in domestic markets, impact on Agriculture and food security. The outcome of this study will be used to launch a campaign which will culminate into the world food day celebrations.
7. Participation at the CHOGM and the 8th WAMM
Uganda is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and the Women’s Affairs Ministerial meeting in November and July 2007, respectively. AWEPON is in the organising committee, and it is planned that AWEPON together with the GCAP national coalitions will raise issues of GCAP during the civil society meeting as well as try to engage with governments during the meetings. AWEPON is participating in the preparations for the CHOGM this is contribution on behalf of CSOs as Uganda hosts the common wealth heads of state in 2007. A report on the budget trucking and financing gender equality will be presented by AWEPON during these two meetings.
8. International day to commemorate HIV/AIDS
HIV/Aids is still one of the pertinent development issues affecting the globe, Therefore the coalition will continue advocating for mote aid towards the pandemic, universal access to ARTVs and more government expenditure on those living with HIV/Aids. There is indeed urgency for women to mobilise around these days owing to the fact that they are the most affected by the pandemic especially in Africa.
