Communique of the Feminist Task Force Strategic Meeting Nairobi, Kenya, January 2007

Members of the Feminist Task Force (FTF) Facilitation Team met in Nairobi, Kenya, on 19-20 January 2007 prior to the World Social Forum to develop a mobilization strategy for the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) days of mobilization in 2007.

Beginning with the first day of mobilization on March 8th, International Women’s Day, the FTF will take the lead in providing messaging and content to GCAP partners to infuse all national mobilizations with the key message: “Gender Equality to End Poverty.” The March 8th campaign will be global in scope with national and regional specific demands to apply pressure on national and local governments and to send the message that without the inclusion of gender equality, no development policies can be accepted.

The goal is a global mass virtual mobilization designed so that every person can take personal action.

The menu of activities and actions include:

  • E-cards, e-mails, SMS/text messages
  • Postcards and letter writing
  • Banners
  • Website postings and links
  • Videos, films
  • Rallies, demonstrations, public actions
  • Policy panels and forums
  • Political and cultural events

Furthermore, the FTF has identified the following dates to highlight “Gender Equality to End Poverty:”

  • 7-7-07 – MDG’s mid-point to highlight governments’ progress in addressing women’s issues
  • 17 October – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
  • 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (25 November, International Day Against Violence Against Women through 10 December, International Human Rights Day)

Specific actions have been proposed for these dates that will be communicated in a timely manner to all GCAP constituency to enable their support and participation.

The FTF looks forward to working hand in hand with national coalitions to increase the visibility and bring better understanding of the linkages between gender, poverty and inequality.

The FTF continues to emphasize the importance of mainstreaming gender within GCAP and working together towards bridging constituencies. It strengthened its facilitation team by appointing representatives in two more sub-regions;

The meeting was organized to coincide with the World Social Forum as well as the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) General Assembly and the Feminist Dialogues in order to emphasize the inter-linkages between gender, poverty, education, and women’s visibility at these functions. A statement was presented to the WSF. A full report on the meeting and the FTF statement will be disseminated through GCAP communication sources.
