60th anniversary of UDHR - Youth and religious leaders in Mwiki - Kenya donate food to the poor.
The youth and religious leaders in Mwiki – Kasarani have today launched one year campaign to eradicate hunger in the area. Speaking during the launch, the National Coordinator of the Global Call to Action against Poverty said that urban food poverty incidence in Kenya increased from 38.3% to 40.5% between1997 and 2006.
Mwangi Waituru noted that no amount financial investment will help us overcome the denial of right to food without reconstruction of the social security nets.
The current consumer society is rapidly eroding the traditional security nets system leaving the poor more and more vulnerable.
He disclosed that today we have more food than we had twenty years ago and yet the level and depth of food poverty is on the rise. "It is a pity that some of us continue to suffer so much hunger in the midst of so much abundance" said Waituru.
The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration Human Rights comes barely a month after the government of Kenya acknowledged that the nation will not be achieving most of the MDGs, among them goal number one on addressing the problem of extreme hunger.
The coordinator of the Global Call to Action Against poverty stated that it is a grave violation of basic human rights that in a land of abundance such as Kenya children still go to bed on an empty stomach.
Speaking during the same activity that saw the youth join hands with the clergy to distribute food to over 150 families and two children's homes, the 2008 Miss United States International University, Gladys Nyatichi announced that the youth cannot accept this trend and have in the recent past "demonstrated their ability and will power to move the nation" "We have the resolve, the energy and the time to ensure that our human rights are achieved in our lifetime", said the beauty queen.
Glays Nyantichi the brain behind the youth food camp for the poor took advantage of the event to pass a message to the doubting Thomases and those that prophesy doom, that the youth shall inform, inspire and mobilize themselves to achieve what "our leaders have failed to achieve."
