The Davos Question

youtube.com/davos

Million-strong mandate from the people to G8This is a real opportunity to demonstrate to world leaders that poverty needs to be at the top of their agenda.

Over one billion people still live on less than a dollar a day. We need to ACT NOW against poverty. World leaders need to ACT NOW and keep their promises.

From January 22nd to 27th, business leaders, politicians and others will meet in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum. This year, you have the opportunity to be heard at this meeting. All you need to do is submit a short video answering this question:

“What one thing do you think that countries, companies or individuals must do

to make the world a better place in 2008?”

Videos should be uploaded to youtube.com/davos by January 21st. Then, anyone can go online and vote for their favourite video, and the highest-rated videos will be screened at Davos, where world leaders will watch your videos and make responses of their own.

What do you have to do?

1) Agree and prepare an answer to the question – try to focus on one key message that will make a difference in your political environment. For example:

  • In 2008, take further action on aid, trade and debt to make sure the world meets and exceeds the Millennium Development Goals by 2015
  • All G8 countries should agree new targets for cutting carbon emissions at their meeting in Japan in July
  • Renegotiate trade agreements between the EU and Africa so they work for the poor

2) Video your response - Try to do it somewhere with an interesting background/landmark that places you in your country in some way. Avoid just doing it in your office or house – make it interesting!

3) Keep the camera steady and in focus – it’s much easier to do this if someone else holds the camera and you look straight into the centre of the camera lens. If possible, try to edit the message with other film footage of your GCAP national days of mobilization. (Only if you have the capacity to edit this).

4) Show or mention you are part of the GCAP worldwide alliance – you can wear a GCAP t-shirt or one from the campaign in your country, have a flag or banner up behind you or jut mention it in your message.

5) Go to the website and upload it under the name of GCAP and your country coalition

Once you have uploaded it, you can vote on the website. And even if you can’t make your own video, make sure to go online and vote!
