Women's and development organisations the world over are gearing up in a major way to demand equality for women on the International Women's Day - March 08. They plan to hold a rallies, conduct workshops, demonstrations, hold art events and release reports on the performance of their governments.

Activists and women's organisations, all over the world, will celebrate the International Women's Day on March 08, 2007 with various kinds of programmes and activities. Here  are projects from Sri Lanka, Argentina, Peru, Nepal, El Salvador and India.

SRI LANKA

Women from all over the island will gather in front of the main railway station in Sri Lankan capital Colombo to call for an end to the war and to
protest the rising cost of living. The women are treating the day as a day of solidarity and
sharing their collective strength as well as an opportunity to raise voices in unison against the repression and exploitation that women face every day.

The day will be marked by street theatre performances and other forms of celebration as
well as of resistance and protest. This day women will celebrate the courage of women workers in garment factories in New York in 1857 who
demonstrated for better wages and for a 10-hour working day and who paved the way for women's celebrations and demonstrations today!

Sri Lankan women are organizing the gathering on March 8 in the face of a range of repressive
laws and regulations that prohibit such actions. Women hope that their collective presence will encourage the security forces to leave them alone to celebrate the day!

The Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (WNTA), which is the GCAP coalition in India, plans to mark March 8th this year by releasing a report containing perspective papers on the National Common Minimum Program (NCMP), which has the key policy commitments of the Indian government and its outcomes for women.

The 20-25 page booklet, tentatively titled Engendering Governance - Strengthening the Outcomes of NCMP through Women's Participation & Leadership will contain reviews of the NCMP and its three flagship schemes on the Right to Work, Right to Health & Right To Education - from a gender perspective by noted experts and leaders of the women's movement on the subject.

The WNTA plans to have a simultaneous release of this Perspective Report  across states and across organizations on the International Women's Day on March 8th, 2007. The day will also serve to strengthen engagement with women's groups & networks across national and state levels.

WNTA also proposes to follow this up with a National Dialogue on Engendering the NCMP & MDGs in collaboration with key government agencies and networks a few months later.
